In 1981, Gateway Domestic Violence Center
was created as a nonprofit emergency shelter for battered women in the
Gainesville/Hall County area. Since October of the following year, our
staff and volunteers have operated a 24-hour crisis hotline. In 2004,
we handled over 3,300 calls.
Each year, Gateway Domestic Violence Center serves about 1500 victims of domestic violence, including 350 children.
LIFE IN THE SHELTER
Living Space:
Gateway Domestic Violence Center
has 14 bed spaces for women and their children in a community-style
living arrangement. We try to give each woman a private bedroom and
semi-private bath beyond the common areas. General housekeeping duties
are shared and issues are addressed in occasional "house meetings."
Security: Guests
are asked to enter and exit the shelter by the front door, which is
locked at all times. You can sign in and out and tell a staff member
where you'll be and for how long. Children must be supervised at all
times, especially on the playground.
Food, Clothing, etc.: There is no cost
for any of our services, which include food (including special dietary
needs), clothing, and personal hygiene items. Be sure to tell the staff
about any special medical conditions or allergies you or your children
have. The Women's Advocate can help you with cultural and religious
observances as well as special events (such as birthdays).
Transportation: If you don't have your own transportation, Gateway Domestic Violence Center
can help you with necessary travel for medical and legal appointments,
job interviews, and so on. The staff will help you with arrangements
for your children's school transportation.
THE STAFF
We believe that every woman and family is different and has different needs. Gateway Domestic Violence Center
